In this feature, we take an inside look at the journey of saving our clients over 40% off their hotel bookings in the Pacific North West area of USA (Seattle / Portland)

Stay Preferences

A lot of our clients have specific preferences when staying in hotels during their travels, either corporate or personal.

In this scenario, our client wanted to book a hotel for 2 nights, 1 night in Seattle and 1 night in Portland. The client was also a frequent stay member of the Marriott Bonvoy program, and had a preference towards the brand unless something significantly cheaper came up.

The stay in Seattle was expected to be a quick overnight stopover, coming late in the evening and leaving early morning as they continue their drive to Portland. As such, they were hesitant on paying a premium for a 4 Star or 5 Star hotel, like the Four Seasons Seattle, or the Fairmont Olympic Seattle, but had expectations of a decent branded property that will maintain brand standards and cleanliness before continuing their journey the next morning. One clear requirement was, they needed to stay close to the highway, because it was essentially a stopover on the way to Portland.

Our research led us to the following properties:

  • Marriott Redmond
  • Marriott Bellevue
  • Delta Hotels Everett
  • Four Points by Sheraton Seattle Airport
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites Tacoma DuPont

Of the five identified options, we would sort the hotels by quality in the following descending order:

  1. Marriott
  2. Delta Hotels
  3. Four Points by Sheraton
  4. Fairfield Inn & Suites

We knew our customer would prefer the Marriott Hotel, but at the same time, was not willing to pay a significant premium for it. So we did what an excellent travel agent does, we made bookings for each brand, and gave the option to the customer to choose at a later time what their exact preference was. These were the rates we booked the customer for:

  • Marriott: US$202.32
  • Delta: US$170.94
  • Four Points by Sheraton: US$168.35
  • Fairfield Inn: US$142.35

Fairfield Inn & Suites Seattle-Tacoma DuPont Exterior. The cheapest price for Seattle

A few days later, we continuously looked for cheaper rooms and discovered that the Four Points by Sheraton Seattle Airport had dropped their rates by US$10 for a total of US$158.34. We immediately made a new booking and cancelled the older reservation.

Four Points by Sheraton Seattle Airport – Lobby

Soon after, we discovered that the Marriott Hotel in Bellevue started providing additional discounts, and reduced their room rate to US$173.89. Because we considered the Marriott Redmond and Marriott Bellevue to be equivalent hotels, we cancelled their hotel in Redmond and re-booked their stay in Bellevue. Soon after the re-booking, the Marriott Bellevue further dropped their rates from US$173.89 to US$154.45. Once again, we cancelled and re-booked their reservation right away.

Ultimately, the customer had the following options:

  • Marriott: US$154.45
  • Delta: US$170.94
  • Four Points by Sheraton: US$158.34
  • Fairfield Inn: US$142.35

With the remaining options, it was an easy decision for our customer to choose the Marriott Bellevue. At only US$12 more than the cheapest option, it was money well spent for the customer.

Marriott Bellevue King Guest Room – The Selected Hotel

Unfortunately, during our price comparison phase, we discovered that the benefits being offered by the hotels where we had access to exclusive benefits did not warrant the cost premium of staying at those hotels when we recognized the customer wanted to stay away from the hotel and enjoy the local downtown eats.

Instead, we discovered the following prices at the other alternative hotels:

  • Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront: US$264.04
  • AC Hotel Portland: US$239.89

There was another hotel, Hi-Lo, but it was priced similarly to the most luxurious hotels in Portland without any of the amenities, so we discounted that as an option for the customer. Soon after, we discovered that the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront cut their price to US$216.76.

On the day prior to beginning their travels, we discovered that the Hi-Lo Hotel, Autograph Collection, a luxury hotel in Portland had significantly discounted their prices to just US$201.78. We immediately cancelled stays at both the Marriott and the AC Hotel, since the Hi-Lo hotel was significantly better, and now cheaper than any other alternative in Portland.

One of the most luxurious hotels in Portland that was cheaper than any other mid-range hotel!
